I took my first trip out of the US this month and went to visit my sister and brother-in-law in Berlin! I wanted to stay in Germany forever, there are so many trees and parks and there’s running water everywhere, cobblestone sidewalks, amazing food, cool music, rad bars, all of the people are super nice and laid back, I <333 Berlin!
- Sparkly mermaid Barbie display in the Amsterdam Airport
- The first place we went in Berlin was a park that was built over ruins of bombed out buildings. There was a little petting zoo on one side of the park, and this huge pig was the first creature inside.
- Eddie petting a goat
- Awww!!! So cute!!
- Donkey didn’t want attention
- One side of the park with some ruins
- There’s graffiti everywhere, most of it is really cool. Such as this clown head
- All of the buildings in Berlin are beautiful
- Sign outside of some restaurant with a doll head chained between the lions
- Huge graffiti
- Gnarly fish graffiti
- All of the public phones in Berlin are painted pink!
- There are trees everywhere! And a park and/or canal on almost every block! It’s so beautiful!
- This is the first bar we went to on Wednesday night. It was very relaxing to sit on the docks drinking beer. Sometimes people fall into the canal, but all of the bar’s patrons were well behaved on this night.
- On Thursday we went to Bar 24 to watch the World Cup, Germany vs Serbia. This place was amazing, it had a bar, sandy beach area, swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, stadium seating, mini soccer field, and huge-screen tv set up to watch the game w/ live announcer! Adidas actually payed over 1 million $$ for it to be constructed.
- View across the canal from Bar 24
- Me and Sissy in the Jannowitzbruche subway station
- Fish graffiti
- Canal on the way to feed the geese
- Bridge on the way to feed the geese
- Another cool bridge on the way to see the geese
- To-Do list on the way to feed the geese
- Amazing architecture on the building across the canal from where we sat
- Gutted boat, popular sitting grounds when coming over to feed the geese
- Another view of the boat
- Another view of where we were sitting
- One of the geese that came over to eat bread
- Gargoyle on door on the way back from the canal
- A never ending building on our way to start a night of bar-hopping. I borrowed a cape from Sissy, and as we were walking we came across a scythe-shaped piece of wood on the sidewalk and had to get a few shots of it – those pictures to come later :)
- Reclaim Your City is a website photogallery of guerilla street art in Berlin
- On Friday we went thrifting in the morning, and when we came out of Garage we were in the middle of the Berlin Gay Pride Parade!
- Angry ladies
- More gay pride
- There was actually a boy band at the root of Gay Pride day, named Boybanned…amazing.
- Eddie and me in front of a U Bahn station
- Me and Sissy in front of the Reichstag building
- Reichstag building upper details
- Me in some huge, historic subway near Reichstag
- Weird Turkish window display
- Epic building
- Epic building detail
- Great tacky window display
- Instant Happy Memories! Part of the sub-letter’s house decor
- We happened upon a flea market one day, and these puppets were at one end of it wandering around
- More feeding of the swans, but this time there was swan drama. The alpha swan was hissing at the other guys and chasing them off. Then some kid came up and threw water from a cup at them. Then a lady dangled her infant over the water and pretended to throw him in…that got a little too weird.
- On the way to an Ariel Pink show we passed this building with an interesting and not particularly stable looking topper
- On Tuesday, my last day there, we went to see the Berlin Wall Memorials. This is an adult playground when you get out of the subway.
- Me in front of the Berlin Wall. It’s shaped like an L so that if a car tried to ram it, the car’s weight would be on the bottom of the L, holding the wall upright.
- Dismantled pieces of the Wall, covered in new growth
- More pieces of the wall
- Me and Sissy in front of what’s left of the Wall
- The Berlin wall ran through half of this cemetery, this is the part that was left intact
- This was built over the other half of the cemetery. That watch tower was in the Dead Zone, wide open space between the 2 walls.
- This is the view between the 2 concrete slats in the previous picture; all you could see when looking into the Dead Zone from this side.
- Huge memorial wall
- Eddie and Sissy in front of another huge, rusty memorial wall
- Me in front of the Church of Reconciliation
- Creepy, faceless remains from demolished ancient church that was inside the Dead Zone between the Berlin Walls.
- Peeking through wood slats of the bell tower by the Church of Reconciliation
- Another church we passed
- inside the church, amazing architecture and details
- Cool rusty park with cement lawn chair
- More of the rusty park – moss covered boot planters look awesome
- Three cobras owning a rat in a restaurant window display
- The last place we went on my trip was this little baked potato restaurant. All they served were baked potatoes covered in delicious mountains of toppings. Everything in there was painted black, and the black wood stump chairs were topped with black leather nailed onto its sides.
I didn’t get any picture of my favorite place though! Bar 25 is this beautiful outdoors venue that’s like camping in a circus – there’s a pizza place, restaurant, bar (all overlooking a canal lined by huge, healthy trees), stage, performance stadium with additional bar…and if you go on Saturday, you can stay and party/chill there all day and night until Monday! I love Berlin, I can’t wait to go back :D
