2008 :: Sounds of Silence Costumes

These costumes were designed by Joe Holliday for the cult film Sounds of Silence:

I was in charge of making the red velvet jacket.  I made the pattern based on a 19th century jacket where the side seams are actually the darts in the back.  Distressed it using black fabric paint, coffee grounds, and hot glue, and silver sharpey to age the gold buttons.  I also used a sharp knife to shred the bottom, and to add a few holes to the body.  The insignia are all just hot-glue-gun glue, and painted over with fabric paint.  All the bones are real, courtesy of Joe :)  He also supplied the real monkey fur which lines the neck behind the stand-up collar. For Delisa’s costume I was assigned the pleather bib.  I used cover-your-own-buttons so I could use the pleather for those too.

I did the collar for this guy.  It was a lot of work, but soo cool!  I made it out of thick sew-in interfacing, folded and ironed every inch or so to get the accordion shape.  Then i glued it onto a strip of interfacing for the neck, which was lined w/ black (synthetic) fur for comfort, with ribbons to tie it.  I aged it with tea, fabric paint, and some splatters of red and yellow (diluted) fabric paint, then went to town on it w/ a serrated knife, scraping all the texture into it :)

Oh, I also did a few simple cloaks:

Archive of Ancient Projects

Here are some of my favorite ancient creations that I have pictures of:
websjacketf3 I made this one when I was 17 out of a rad black and red cape my great-aunt made me for Halloween when I was a kid, and I used black spiderweb lace over it. It’s reversible! I made it w/out a pattern, and altered it hundreds of times to get a perfect fit. Then never wore it…
heavy metal skull shirt by insidious clothing Made this totally kick ass shirt in 2006, which was later ripped off by some chick who started selling super cheap imitations of it on her website :(
zombie destruction shirt by insidious clothing This was made out of another cannibalized Halloween costume - the purple fabric came from an awesome witch/faerie dress I used to wear all the time when I was a kid. It says “zombie” out of scraps on the side.
ivory lace and black velvet top with attached collar I really like to make stuff with attached collars…

The off-white stripes were made out of some fabric that was used as wrapping paper from one of my birthdays a couple years prior. The lace was my great-grandma’s…she also was a seamstress :)

purse with gir from invader zim sewn on I made this custom purse as a present for a family member. She loved the show Invader Zim, so I made a purse with hand-sewn Gir on both sides (he’s in defense mode on the back).
eh, there are more ancient designs on my flickr account, here.
